Desktop-as-a-service (DaaS), also called virtual desktop or hosted desktop services, is the outsourcing of a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) to a third party service provider. Typically, DaaS has a multi-tenancy architecture and streams the desktop image to your end console device, such as a desktop, laptop, thin client, tablet, or smartphone. This service has many benefits for businesses of all sizes, including:
- Overhead: Control costs by only paying for what you use on a per-user basis. This is especially useful for seasonal employers and call centers. This also eliminates Operating System licensing fees.
- Eliminate hardware: With DaaS/VDI, all the system processing takes place off-site on a virtual server, so you no longer have to worry about the processing power of your work stations. Furthermore, you no longer need a desktop or laptop with high computing power. Most computer manufacturers sell Thin or Zero clients of varying specifications and typically start under $100.
- Support: Desktop administration would be handled off site by the carrier. The service comes with 24/7 support, including Operating System updates and security patches. This creates less of a need for on-site desktop administration and IT support. Support for application integration and on-boarding are also added benefits.
